yesterday, 3rd august there was an event at basantapur square -- "बाडी पीडितको निम्ती हाम्रो बिन्ती" organised by youth for the benefit of the flood victims of far western nepal. i went to basantapur, mainly to see avaya and the albatross perform at the event. it was a significant gig for band, as rock bands it seems are rarely allowed to play in this historic locale. by the time i reached the venue, the last of the comic artistes were winding up.. but the rain was still beating down.. there were umbrellas everywhere.. and the crowd was not too large... oops, i thought...
appeal for support
the stage was blocked by the umbrellas
sun going down behind the temple in hanuman dhoka durbar square
rain seems to be thinning down
aaahhh.. some promise...
.. the rock bands take on the stage in front of ganeshman
... the rain fades away...
... and the umbrellas disappear..
... and the crowd begins to thicken...
money collected at one of the donation booths...
... audience begins to warm up...
people in terraces and rooftops...
.. the cobwebs take over.. the second last band to play...
as daylight dims, last minute adjustments with lights...
.. and excited fan when albatross ' name is announced...
the young people who organised the fundraising event being thanked
avaya checking his instrument... avaya said, playing at basantapur has always been his dream !
.. warming up...
.. and they begin...
.. this is their first song.. don't mind the shaky waky camera... we had to dodge all kinds of moving elements in front of us.. or being jostled around !!
.. now a better shot of sunny, shirish and avaya
.. and this is song number two and three... "shristi ra drishti" and "gari khana deu"
.. and the final song of the whole event.. "pharki pharki"
... so that was the show in basantapur....
