purba is purba and paschim is paschim.. and indeed they do meet!! the east west centre (ewc) nepal chapter got together in yala maya kendra in patan to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ewc, bringing together more than two dozen ewc grantees along with their spouses... it was a time for reminiscence, catching up and getting introduced to the newer grantees. (some of the pictures courtesy asheshwar man shrestha)
final preparations before the group arrives...
the early birds... asheshwor shrestha, keshab bidari, kiran joshi and nirendra maske
alok rajouria chats up with asheshwar and keshav, while sudershan tiwari and manik tuladhar discuss the beni electricity pole...
.. the pole, bearing the brunt of a night-long battle of beni, is part of the peace museum exhibit at yala maya kendra...
... yamal rajbhandary from the us education foundation chats up with nirendra maske (with the 50th anniversary commemorative t-shirt) and kiran joshi
bidyaratna bajracharya phones-a-friend to get his own contact details...
tea-time for sudershan and manik
sumitra manandhar gurung catches up with friends...ramesh singh and sushila singh...
... neeranjan rajbhandary and his daughter ruma, second from left, also join the group...
sudershan and tirtha tara tuladhar catching up...
ruma, neeranjan, sushila and maimooni siddiqui
ewc class of '61 batch mates, jagadish sharma and bidyaratna bajracharya.. all smiles...
kiran and aruna sharma in a lighter moment...
then the formal portion of the get together began with rupa joshi's 'aloha!'
... first up was the acting president of the ewc nepal chapter nirendra maske...
...he briefed the gathering about the developments in the past year, with special emphasis on the 50th anniversary celebrations in honolulu in july 2010...
the purba paschimelis listened to mr. maske briefing them about the appreciation from ewc about the money raised by the nepal chapter for the tsunami, of the community service activities including those with bal bhojan children; the 3-month-training of two teachers from bal bhojan in rato bangala school; as well as the scholarship being provided to two girls via the 'twinning' with ewc brisbane chapter... he also raised the point about raising funds for ewc from nepal, maybe by requesting the government to repeat the kind of donation they'd made several decades ago...
... maskeji then talked about the then president of the nepal chapter shankar sharma receiving the 'distinguished alumni' award; the nepal chapter also receiving the 'outstanding chapter' award; and maskeji being nominated to the ewca executive board and the chair of the ewc alumni executive board effective july 2011 to dec 2012... here he is displaying the outstanding chapter award...
... then it was turn for asheshwar, architectural batch of 2010...
... to give a presentation...
...asheshwor displayed the 3D google earth models of ewc buildings in manoa that had been developed by asheshwar and team for the 50th anniversary celebrations and featured in the ewc website
the audience was taken through a semi-virtual tour of the ewc buildings around which they had spent the 'best years of their life'
... it started with the crow's eye view of the premises...
... then zooming down to the ewc marker...
.. hale manoa.. dorm for the guys...
... hale kuahine for the gals...
.. and the jefferson centre...
more images of the ewc complex can be seen on the facebook site:
http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.403497232292.181689.739607292&l=dd35427a0d
and the ewc website:
http://www.eastwestcenter.org/about-ewc/visitor-information/#3dmodel
next it was turn for bidyaratnaji to give the audience a taste of his experiences at ewc, 50 years ago. he talked about how there were four of them in the first nepali batch at ewc: himself, jagadish sharma, late shankar chapagain and saraswati shrestha; about how the four of them sang 'himalko kaakh ma chha sano mero gaon" by tara devi when asked to present an item at a cultural programme... and the party in waikiki, where they just learnt recently, barack obama's father had also been present...
... jagadishji then added a humourous incident of how bidyaji's quip entertained his peers in honolulu... and how when the americans asked if anything bothered nepalis during picnic, like the mosquitos bother the americans during outings, bidyaji had nonchalantly said "tigers.. they bother us, but we just shoo them away!"
... the audience was tickled...
usef's yamal then informed the audience about the 50 years celebration of usef in nepal, and what activities the ewc nepal chapter could undertake to be more active. he suggested having a database of all ewc members, and urged them to make contributions for the upcoming website... he also suggested that since usef has stopped having competitions for ewc from 2010, if the nepali chapter could manage to do some fundraising to support at least one candidate to be selected to go to ewc, it would be a great thing...
alok, batch of 2002, who worked in honolulu for six years and has just returned to town, informed the audience about the association of nepalis living in hawaii - sneha...
... next sunita chaudhary briefly talked about how the experience in honolulu was the best in her life...
rupa then asked the former grantees to look for old photographs from honolulu that could be turned into a presentation to be uploaded into the usef website... including those of hula sessions, or huli huli chicken...
...after a big 'mahalo' everyone filed out to partake of the mini luau with pupus and drinks
waiting for the drinks to be filled.. nirendra, sunita, her husband jainendra, asheshwar, keshav and kiran...
..tirtha and sushila catch up on news...
...alok chats up with manik...
sushila, shradha sharma (prasai), sagar prasai, and manik...
jainendra, neeranjan, anjir and rajendra...
... 'pupus' time... one could have the food...
... and eat it to...
...some like alok and sudershan...
... and pravin chitrakar, asheshwor and keshav, lingered a bit before diving into the food...

this morning
these are scenes from this morning in kathmandu. i was at the rally of youths mobilised through facebook to make their voices heard about the timely drafting of the nepali constitution. not a youth myself, i felt that being 'young at heart' justified my being there to show my solidarity on their issue. i started walking back home once the rally, chanting slogans started circumnavigating the bcci premises. the rest of the pictures are those that i took during my walk back from baneshwor to bagh bazar.
this clip of the crowd chanting slogans like "no work - no pay!" and "पन्ध्र दिनमा सम्बिधान!" amongst others...
rallyists in front of the banner that said "अहिले नगरे कहिले? हामीले नगरे कसले?"
some of the buntings...
... and placards...
... rameshwor khanal the current popular activism 'flavour' spoke for a while (we at the back could not hear a word)...
... and lo and behold.. mr. dhamala appears where the cameras are focussed...
... some of the participants...
... a while later the rally decided to go around the bcci, where the samsads are meant to sit down to draft the new constituion...
a relection of the mess our country is in... haphazard, chaotic planning in baneshwor...
the city keeps growing... these buildings next to dhobi khola.. which luckily, due to the daily rainfall the valley has been experiencing, at least has some water flowing in it...
the other बिजोग is of the maitighar shanti mandal. there was a time when the mandal, with its coloured pebbles, the small moat outside it, and the wonderful flowers growing in this traffic island, used to be a thing of beauty. it was sad to see the burnt grass remnant of some recent protest...
the lost glory of the ढुङ्गे धारा ...
... and the mandal itself.. the iron patterns already being displaced. protestors who throng this place, walk all over the mandal.. the coloured pebbles have been mixed about... a sad state of neglect of what once used to be something to boast about...
behind the giant billboards in between the army barrack and the health ministry, is some empty land... couldn't we reserve that green space to be converted into a place where children can play and romp? a park? or a playground?
.. walking further north, this statue of the unifier of the nation.. the monument disfigured by the well-meaning-enamel-paint-weilding नेपालको खलासी...
a man walks past with a metal cabinet...
thin traffic (lack of gasoline + saturday)in putali sadak...
... a cleared up area probably ready for another high rise.. another place that could definitely be developed into a green space to serve all the children in the putalisadak and new plaza area... नत्र 'कहाँ खेल्छन् ति नानीहरू' ?
... this is where the momo king restaurant was once housed...
kripa's artwork still showing on the wall...
narrow glittering buildings replacing crumbling ones in putali sadak...
signboards along pultai sadak, which could very well be renamed "'abroad study' & institutes sadak".... reflecting and feeding young people's pscyche to get out of the country...
... an overflowing dustbin on the roadside.. filled with plastic and paper that we could have easily separated at home for proper recycling...
and then... turning westwards into bagh bazar over the tukucha khola... a youth walks by the kind of posters naseeruddin shah might have been referring to in his interview with girish giri... and also past the rubbish pile...
at least this pipal tree over the tukucha provides shade enough for business of the roadside cobbler...
... and that was what i saw this morning...

robindro shongeetanjali in kathmandu
attended a wonderful musical concert today...soothing... beautiful... it was the first time for me to hear rabindra shongeet live.. and that too sung by nepali singers... i had only taken a small camera with me.. so the pictures do not do justice to the beautiful atmosphere, nor the beautiful voices...
the programme to launch the nepali celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of the first asian nobel laureate-- shree rabindra nath thakur (tagore)-- was compered jointly by robin sharma and nupurji. nupurji's translation (her own) of the songs, which she shared with the audience before each performance were in themselves sheer poetry, uttered in her mellifluous soft voice.. flowing like a river...
the programme was held at the pragya pratisthan.. this is the striking banner showing the master's handwriting bangla and english...
.. nupurji gave the welcome address once the honourable president came to the programme, and after welcoming him with chandan tika and chadar.. she said that in one of his poems poet rabindranath had wondered whether anyone would hear his works and words a hundred years hence... and now we were celebrating his songs and works on his 150th anniversary...
indian ambassador followed her...
.. then the president lighted the inaugural diyo...
... and launched the nepali version of the famous geetanjali.. which was translated sixty years ago by khagendra pradhananga, the father of playwright ashesh malla, and now reprinted by the b.p. koirala foundation...
the president spoke for a short while, first fumbling for his glasses that he had left behind in his seat... he said he was attracted to robindroshongeet when he was student himself in kolkota... at the end he apologised to all present, especially the singers, that he couldn't sit and listen to their sangeet as he had to attend another function too...
.. after the president's departure, the programme began with the singers of the anadalok ensemble-- nupur bhattacharya, robin sharma, biswajit (biltu) ghosh, sangita pradhan rana, sushmita talukdar, tapas pramanik, anjana shrestha and chandana dasgupta. they sang anandaloke mongalaloke
this fuzzy picture of ashesh malla who recited a poem from the nepali geetanjali translated by his father. he said it was when he was translating geetanjali that his father came across the word 'ashesh' (meaning endless) and chose the name for his son!
next it was nilanjana bhattacharya (nupurji's daughter) with a solo o aamar chander alo
a couple of songs later, including a duet by nupurji and robin, as well as by sushmitaji, it was a surpise to hear the hemant kumar-like voice of biswajit ghosh. we know him as biltu, mr and mrs ghosh' son. hearing his flowing voice, and seeing him reminded me of the late mrs. ghosh, who was very attached to deviji... sigh! he sang katobar bhebechhinu
next it was bimla rai's (with training in robindroshongeet) turn to sing the 'springy' song basante phool ganthlo.
this dark and fuzzy image of nupurji and sangitaji singing a beautiful duet on rainfall esho shyamala sundara
next robin sharma with his deep voice, sang the aabar eshechhe asar
there were several other songs... the only nepali song in rabindrasangeet, nupurji singing purana ti dinka kura (purano sei dinaer katha).. a solo shehdin dujane dulechhinu bohe by chandana sengupta and an extrememly beautiful rendition of dariye aachho tumi by sangita pradhan, who also trained in robindroshongeet in bengal..
then it was the turn of the anthem aekla cholo re (walk alone)sung by the choir. click on the link to hear the last stanza of the inspirational song...
the last presenation was the song khol dwar khol, laglo je dol again sung by the choir, during which girls from the kendriya vidyalaya in lazimpat danced down the aisles...
... and then performed a group dance on the stage...
... and that brought the curtains down on the robindroshongeetanjali
happy 150th robindronath thakurji!
